Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a popular treatment for fine lines, acne scars, texture, tone and hyperpigmentation. At Valley Dermatology and Aesthetics, we utilize the Rejuvapen NXT® which is the #1 FDA-Cleared microneedling device. It is a remarkable, non-laser, non-surgical treatment that causes the skin to stimulate collagen production and fresh, new tissue. Rejuvapen is an excellent choice and is safe for ALL skin types and colors, including darker skin.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling utilizes tiny needles to create hundreds of controlled micro-injuries to the skin. The skin’s natural repair process then stimulates production of new collagen and elastin, which results in the reduction of wrinkles and scars and improves skin texture. Microneedling also creates superficial micro-channels which allow topical serums like hyaluronic acid to be absorbed more effectively into the skin.

What areas of the body can I treat?

Because of the RejuvaPen’s variable needle depth, microneedling can be used on many parts of the body including the face, neck, décolletage, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.

How Is The Procedure Done?

A sterile cartridge containing 12 sterile 33 gauge stainless steel needles is attached to the Rejuvapen NXT®. Your provider will apply a thin layer of hyaluronic acid to your skin and select the appropriate needle depth setting based on your unique needs. Next, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin until the entire treatment area has been covered. The procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area to be treated.

What Does It Feel Like?

A topical numbing cream can be applied prior to the procedure to reduce discomfort. The needle tip is designed to be incredibly thin, while the handheld device delivers needle injections as quickly and as rapidly as possible. As a result, many patients often report feeling little to no pain at all. Those who did report discomfort indicated it felt like a mild tingling sensation.

What Is The Downtime?

Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness and pinpoint bleeding to the skin. The total healing time depends on the Rejuvapen NXT® setting used and the number of overlapping passes your provider performs. On average, patients are red for up to 2 to 4 days. Many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours.

When Will I See The Results?

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments will be determined by your goals and your skin’s health. We recommend that most patients receive a series of three treatments spaced four weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, or acne scars, the recommended treatment is six to eight sessions at four to six week intervals.

Can I wear make-up following a procedure?

Typically, patients can resume their normal makeup and skin care regimen two to three days following a Microneedling treatment. Some post-procedure make-up can be used immediately. Generally, mineral based makeup is safe to use. However, this may vary based on the area and type of treatment performed, please consult your treatment provider for a precise recommendation.
